twisted thoughts of you

with a bit of blue beneath me,
I reach out to you and
I feel the magic of our meeting ground.

I am a dog facing the sky,
eating from the earth
with a bit of blue beneath me.

a toe floating before my eyes
and breath my driving force,
I feel the magic of our meeting ground

for I am a warrior defying heaven’s wrath
by watching angels fall.
with a bit of blue beneath me,

I levitate on my piece of sky
in search of my holy phoenix as I cry out,
“I feel the magic of our meeting ground.”

on twisted limbs I lie
as you shine above me, the true light of my path.
with a bit of blue beneath me,
I feel the magic of our meeting ground.

This is a yoga-inspired villanelle.

~ “bit of blue” refers to my yoga mat.

~ The first two lines of stanzas two and three and the first lines of stanzas four, five and six are references to different positions and techniques.

~ The “watching angels fall” reference deals with the acceptance of imperfection that I have gained through my daily practice, especially of my own imperfections followed by the discipline to work with compassion on myself.

~The “holy phoenix” is symbolic of my husband. He is a Scorpio and in astrological literature, the eagle and the phoenix are used as symbols of a highly evolved Scorpio.

"...a bit of blue beneath me."

That's going to stick with me for a while. Thank you.

As a storyteller, I love the repetition and rhythm of that line. As a lover of words, I love the taste of it.

When I first read the poem, before I read the explanation, I knew it was yoga-inspired...but the bit of blue made me think of you sitting on your own scrap of the sky.

Thank you. *happy sigh*

"...a bit of blue beneath me..." so relaxing and evocative. Very important the notion of compassion towards ourselves. Beautifully said.
